Artist's Statement

I paint because it helps me see the world around me.    The skill of the artist's hand is nothing compared to the comprehension of his vision.

I have a great love for beautiful color, both subtle and bold, and my hope is that I can convey in my paintings the beauty I see in the natural world.  I feel great happiness and wonder every time I paint, and I hope my paintings inspire those feelings in you.

"If what you choose to paint comes from your heart, and you are skillful enough, it will resonate somehow within someone else.  It is absurd to imagine that the magnitude of a work is somehow connected to the accepted importance of the subject (or the artist).  The portrait Velasquez did of his manservant surpasses those he did of the Pope or the King of Spain.  Degas found his vision in simple ballet students, not prima ballerinas.  Monet caught it with lily pads and hay;  Lautrec saw angels in prostitutes; Vermeer painted the corner of his room.  Rembrandt dignified humanity by painting his own worn face;  Bach offered us his beautiful abiding love of God, and uncounted thousands of completely anonymous artists gave us their workaday craftsmanship-- things that are now the treasures of antiquity."

-- Richard Schmid in his book "Alla Prima, Everything I Know About Painting"

Biography

I live in League City, Texas, a small town south of Houston, and am retired after a twenty year career in accounting and computers.  For the last four years I have been painting and studying art and I have sold my work on Ebay since the summer of 2002.

As for the rest of my life, I am married and have two daughters, one in college and one soon to be.  We love to travel, and over the years we have ranged far and wide in our small truck camper. I also have been a sailor for over ten years in a variety of small boats, and I enjoy kayaking in my little Feathercraft.  I'm an avid hiker as well, a lot of day-hiking and some longer trips.  Landscape painting is the perfect complement to the rest of my life and has added immeasurably to the pleasure I take in the outdoors.
